Why is My Roof Leaking?
If your roof is leaking, there are a number of culprits that could be responsible for it:
- Cracks in your chimney crown (usually effects brick chimneys)
- Flashing that’s not sealed properly (flashing – strips of metal specifically dedicated to preventing leaks)
- Missing shingles
- Old or worn vent boot (vent boot – similar to flashing, but designed for pipes that protrude from the roof)
- Holes in your roof
- Clogged gutters
- Leaky skylights
Keeping Water Out
The best way to prevent leaks in your home is to properly maintain your roof. This includes inspecting and maintaining your roof’s flashing, having regular roof inspections, keeping trees that hang near or over your roof trimmed, replacing worn or missing shingles and addressing leaks immediately to prevent further damage.
